Pencillium

Habitat and Health Implications
One of the most common genera found in soil, decaying vegetation, food,
compost piles, fruit rot, and various building materials. May be found
indoors in air samples, carpet dust, on wallpaper and in interior fiberglass
duct insulation. Common bread mold is a species of
Penicillium. It may cause
HP and an allergic effect in susceptible individuals. Some species produce
microbial volatile organic compounds (MVOCs). Some species are able
produce mycotoxins that are unhealthy to humans. Various toxins are
produced by different species including Penicillic acid, Peptide nephrotoxin,
Viomellein, Xanthomegin, Xanthocillin X, Mycophenolic acid, Roquefortine
C & D, Citrinin, Cyclopiazonic acid, Isofumigaclavine A, Penitrem A,
Decumbin, Patulin citreoviridin, Verruculogen, Ochratoxin, Chrysogine, and
Meleagrin. Some species cause certain infections in compromised
individuals. Some species are used for antibiotic production such and the
antibiotic Penicillin and Griseofulvin. Some species used for making the blue
cheese.
