Paecilomyces

Habitat and Health Implications
A common saprobe found in soil, decaying vegetation and compost. Some
species are insect parasites while others cause food spoilage. It has been
isolated from jute fibers, paper, timber, optical lenses, leather, photographic
paper, cigar tobacco, harvested grapes, and bottled fruit and fruit juice
undergoing pasteurization. Some reports of allergies include hay fever,
asthma, humidifier associated illnesses, and pneumonia. It produces
Paecilotoxins, byssochlamic acid, Variotin, Ferrirubin, Viriditoxin, Indol-3
acetic acid, Fusigen and Patulin Toxins. It is rarely a human pathogen but can
cause infection in animals. It is associated with pulmonary and sinus
infections in those who had organ transplants, as well as inflammation of the
cornea.
