| Cladosporium Habitat and Health Implications |
| Widely found as plant pathogens and saprobes. It is the most frequently found fungus in outdoor air. It is often found indoors, usually in lesser numbers than outdoors. It usually occurs at low concentrations in damp or humid areas, but may be found in high concentrations in water-damaged building materials. This fungus is often encountered in dirty refrigerators. Frequently isolated as a contaminant in foods. It is commonly found on the surface of fiberglass duct liners in the interior of supply ducts. It is also found on dead plants, woody plants, food, straw, soil, paint, and textiles. Cladosporium often discolors interior paint, paper, or textiles stored under humid conditions. The ability to sporulate heavily, ease of dispersal, and large spores makes this fungus the most important fungal airway allergen. It is a common and important allergen causing hay fever, asthma, and HP. A few species of this genus cause disease in humans; one species can cause chronic subcutaneous infection. Some species produce Cladosporin and Emodin. |
