| Bipolaris Habitat and Health Implications |
| Bipolaris is a common saprobe and plant pathogen mostly on subtropical and tropical plants, particularly grasses. It has been frequently isolated from plant debris, decaying food and soil. It is common in both indoor and outdoor environments. Some species are pathogenic to animals such as dogs, and may cause nasal mycotic granuloma in cattle. It has been reported to produce the mycotoxin, Sterigmatocystin that has been shown to cause liver and kidney damage when ingested by laboratory animals. This fungus causes allergic fungal sinusitis in certain people. |
