| Aspergillus Habitat and Health Implications |
| This genus contains more than 160 recognized species. They are frequently isolated from forest products, soils, compost piles, grains, nuts, cotton, organic debris, stored food and feed products in tropical and subtropical regions. It can be found indoors in water damaged building materials. Spores can also be found in moist ventilation systems and house dust. Some species are parasitic on insects, plants and animals, including man. All of the species contained in the genus should be considered allergenic. A few species can cause aspergillosis in humans with compromised or defective immune systems. Aspergillosis is now the second most common fungal infection requiring hospitalization in the United States. Many Aspergillus species produce mycotoxins that may be associated with diseases in humans and other animals. Other species are used in the manufacture of food, such as blue cheese and soy sauce. |
