Habitat and Health Implications
Naturally found in soils, decaying organic matter, hay and plant debris. This
genus can be found in food and in the indoor environment. Reported to be
possibly allergenic and may cause hay fever, asthma and hypersensitivity
pnuemonitis (HP). Can produce a Trichothecen toxin, which is toxic if
ingested. It can produce mycetomas, infections of the cornea and nails. It may
also give off an unpleasant odor due to the production of volatile organic
compounds (VOCs). Produces cephalosporins, which are an important class
of antibiotics.
